Who We Are
Marin Stables & Trails, Inc. is a non-profit public benefit corporation organized to operate, renovate, and preserve historic Marin Stables, and to maintain the Canyon and Ethel More trail heads, to insure that public use and access to these popular facilities will continue. We operate Marin Stables under a 30 year lease from the Marin Municipal Water District. We rely upon tax deductible contributions to accomplish our mission.Since it first opened to the public in 1937, Marin Stable has been a popular place for local horse lovers to board and ride their horses, and for children and adults to take riding lessons. Moving into the 21st Century, Marin Stables is striving to become a model facility for the implementation of ecologically friendly or “green” stabling practices, and natural horsemanship, stressing the relationship between man and his animal friends.
But Marin Stables is more than just a riding facility. Located at the Canyon and Ethel Moore trail heads, Marin Stables is an important public gateway to the Marin Municipal Water District trails, providing hikers, runners, and equestrians with access to Mt. Tamalpais and the nearby watershed lakes. The horses and riders of Marin Stables not only share the use of the trails, they provide a unique tie to Marin County’s rural past and to the tie between people and horses that has endured since the dawn of civilization. Every day hikers, runners, and mountain bikers pass each other on the trails as strangers, in silence, without so much as exchanging a pleasant hello. Add a horse to the mix and human dynamic completely changes. Families out for a weekend bike ride or hike stop so that their children can “say hello” to the horse. Even the most ardent mountain bikers and trail runners will not pass a horse without exchanging a greeting with the rider.
