Our Mission

Marin Stables & Trails, Inc. is a non-profit public benefit corporation organized to operate, renovate, and preserve historic Marin Stables, and to maintain the Canyon and Ethel More trail heads, to insure that public use and access to these popular facilities will continue. We rely upon tax deductible contributions to accomplish our mission.

We provide a host of public benefits to the people of Marin County and surrounding Bay Area communities, including:

Historic Preservation

Under a long-term lease agreement with the Marin Municipal Water District (MMWD), we manage, maintain and preserve the historic Marin Stables as one of only two remaining public stables in Central Marin.

Under our MMWD agreement, we also maintain the Ethel Moore and Canyon trailheads which provide public access to 25,000 acres of natural open space that include Phoenix Lake, Lake Lagunitas, Bon Tempe Lake, Alpine Lake, and Kent Lake.

Educational & Therapeutic Equestrian Programs

We provide public outreach in the form of educational, therapeutic, and mentoring programs for adults and children. These programs have included:

  • An equine therapy research program for cancer patients
  • Educational programs for school kids, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts
  • Programs for the elderly and for developmentally disabled adults
  • Our annual participation in the Adopt a Family program
  • Programs presently jointly with the Marin Humane Society

Our programs can be life changing, powerful experiences for young and old, urban and suburban, individuals and families.

Environmental Stewardship

Our public programs with schools and other youth agencies promote healthy life choices, a love of the outdoors, and environmental stewardship.

We foster “green” animal husbandry and stabling practices.

Our site Restoration Project will employ best management practices in storm water and sustainable low impact development, as well as utilize green building materials. We also hope that our project will help pioneer a LEED certification process for facilities located in a Wildland-Urban Interface.
